We asked Davey Hat-Trick to give us his match ratings and player comments after Newcastle 0 Brighton 1.

That was a frustrating afternoon.

We were arguably the better side but didn’t do enough to win it.

Brighton had three chances and scored one. We had seven or eight (three were gilt-edged) and scored none.

That was pretty much the story of the match.

In common with many of the people that sit near me, I knew it wasn’t going to be our day long before the final whistle, and Brighton deserve some credit for their disciplined approach.

No one in a black and white shirt played that badly and a couple played quite well. They just didn’t play well together.

I’m not too downhearted. Yet. However, we have nearly all our players available and they need to start clicking soon.

If there was a positive, it’s that we managed to create some chances today and we didn’t do that for large parts of the season so far.

I’m happy to give the team the benefit of the doubt and believe our luck will change. It needs to, and fast.

Nick Pope – 7

Couldn’t do much about the goal and was solid apart from that.

Brighton barely made him work, truth be told

Tino Livramento – 7

Did well for the majority of the game.

Bags of energy and worked the right flank well.

Needs to concentrate for 90 minutes though – there were a couple of poor passes that a better side would have punished

Fabian Schar – 6

Did OK, and was the best passer in our side, but was probably more at fault for the goal than others.

It wouldn’t have mattered if we’d taken our chances but today it mattered

Dan Burn – 8

I thought BDB was good today.

Blocked, tackled, and even sat a Brighton player down with a bit of fancy footwork.

I’m guessing he’ll be the one to lose his place if and when Botman gets back to full fitness, but I’m glad he’s extended his contract.

He’s turned out to be a much better signing than I thought he’s be

Lewis Hall – 7

Has come into his own in the last few games and as far as I’m concerned, he’s our first choice left back.

Solid in defence today and enterprising in attack.

Like Tino, a couple of lapses in concentration, but he’s looking promising

Sandro Tonali – 7

I think we see glimpses of what he can do but he’s yet to be the dominating midfielder that his national side see.

He’s tough, he’s brave, and he’s got some serious tekkers. However, he was hesistant on a couple of occasions when teammates were expecting him to bomb on in the area. It’ll come.

Bruno Guimaraes – 6

Played the pass of the match to put Isak in (Isak should have done better) and was very busy.

I got the impression he was trying too hard, trying to beat his man when a simple pass would have been the better option, and going for spectacular passes that weren’t on. Needs to relax a bit.

Joelinton – 8

The pick of our midfield for me.

Didn’t create a lot to be fair but recovered possession time and again. Didn’t waste the ball when others did.

Jacob Murphy – 6

Busy as ever and was diligent in covering the right back position when Tino was ahead of him.

Tried to play people in but nothing came off for him.

Alexander Isak – 6

Did well to last 90 minutes following his injury lay-off but you could tell he lacked his customary sharpness.

Did some decent stuff with the ball but didn’t play with his usual snap and was wasteful in front of goal.

However, it’s great to have him back

Anthony Gordon – 6

Pressed well and wasn’t afraid to receive the ball and take his man on.

However, he became increasingly frustrated as the game wore on (a) because the ref didn’t give him a thing and (b) he missed a couple of very good chances.

If he’s serious about fulfilling his undoubted potential, he needs to be clinical. He’d have struggled to finish his tea today.

Harvey Barnes – 6

A decent workout.

Tried hard to drive us forward and kept the Brighton defence on their toes. Not sure he deserves to be on the bench but I’m yet to be convinced that he or Gordon can be effective on the right.

Joe Willock – 5

Plenty of energy but didn’t really affect the game.

I’m not sure the combination of Tonali, Bruno and Joelinton works, so I think there’s a place in the starting XI for Willock.

As we know though, he’s one of those players that needs a run in the side to play at his best.

Miguel Almiron – 5

Didn’t really do much.

Brighton had parked the bus by the time he entered the fray, so there were always two men on him.

Sean Longstaff – 6

I thought he did OK when he came on.

A couple of good passes and a bit of grit in the tackle. Not sure he should be on free kicks and corners though.

William Osula – 5

I wouldn’t usually mention someone who had the briefest of cameos but I was impressed with his unbridled enthusiasm.

He’s clearly champing at the bit for more game time and if the right attitude is something we value, he has it.
