Newcastle United can’t win at Wembley? Liverpool now give proof of why for sure they can

It is now just 10 days until Newcastle United meet Liverpool in the Carabao Cup Final at Wembley.
Fair to say that the mood hasn’t improved amongst NUFC fans as the day gets ever closer.
A feeling for many that it is an impossibility for Newcastle United, that Liverpool are going to be unbeatable on the day.
Football is a funny game though.
Liverpool have proved themselves the best team in England this season.
However, does that automatically mean the scousers will win at Wembley and that Newcastle United can’t?
Well, we now have absolute proof of why Newcastle United could win this Carabao Cup Final.
Ironically, this absolute proof delivered by Liverpool themselves.
Wednesday night I sat down to watch the Champions League action.
These were the PSG v Liverpool stats (via BBC Sport) by the end of the match:
Possession: PSG 71% Liverpool 29%
Shots: PSG 27 Liverpool 2
Shots on target: PSG 10 Liverpool 1
Saves by the goalkeeper: PSG 0 Liverpool 9
Corners: PSG 14 Liverpool 2
Player touches in opposition box: PSG 51 Liverpool 13
PSG absolutely battered and outclassed Liverpool.
It was the most one-sided match I have seen all season. When Newcastle United won 8-0 at Sheffield United it was nowhere close to this, in terms of domination.
The scoreline?
PSG 0 Liverpool 1
To anybody who still reckons it is impossible for Newcastle United to win at Wembley, just watch a replay of this match in Paris.
Just have a look at this Opta graphic giving a visual representation of the shots last night, Liverpool’s shown on the left and PSG’s on the right…
Liverpool hardly got out of their own half and scored with their first shot on target in the 87th minute, the goal scored by sub Harvey Elliott with his first touch of the ball.
Alisson with the performance of his life and the Liverpool goal leading an incredibly charmed life.
We all know the luck that Liverpool carry but surely even for them they have now used up all their luck this season.
We also know just how many times Liverpool are favoured by generous decisions from referees and VAR, again, surely they have now used up all their luck and favouritism on that front as well. Somehow PSG not awarded the clearest of penalties, whilst Konate avoided a stonewall red card. VAR decisions and fine margins also going very much in Liverpool’s favour as well.
Luckypool indeed.
I have been telling a few people about the match at Anfield on 1 October 1988, a season when Newcastle United were abysmal and got relegated, that day up against Liverpool when they were in their pomp. Dave Beasant was terrible for us that season after his big money arrival BUT that day had the game of his life, Liverpool were so much on top in that game it was beyond belief. They scored after a few minutes and we all thought here we go, just a case of how many. Only for Beasant to make ten or more world class saves, whilst Newcastle got in their half twice and scored both times! Liverpool 1 Newcastle 2.
It was a first win of the season for United and we suddenly had hope that survival could be possible. Until the following weekend at St James’ Park where we lost 3-0 at home to Coventry!
That’s football folks!
Liverpool are favourites for this Carabao Cup Final BUT it doesn’t mean they will automatically win.
Last night is proof of that, PSG should have won by five or six yet lost the game.
Back on 1 October 1988, the scousers should have won by at least five or six, yet lost the match.
The bookies rate Newcastle United an 11/4 chance to win the Carabao Cup Final, a better than one in four chance.
That sounds about right to me.
However, Newcastle United do still have the quality of Isak, Tonali, Joelinton, Livramento, Bruno and others.
