One of the growing rivalries in the top flight should bring plenty of drama
The Gunners head to St James’ Park this afternoon looking for revenge, and to avoid a potential title race banana skin, after so bad-tempered dropping of points against the Magpies in recent seasons. A loss at this stadium two seasons ago saw the club miss out on the top four and, last season, a controversial defeat had to a weeks-long fallout.
Arsenal are still angry at Anthony Gordon’s winner, which survived three VAR checks but those in Red insist should not have stood. It led to a furious reaction from Mikel Arteta after the game and, remarkably, a public statement from the club backing their manager’s outburst against referees which prompted shock from outsiders. In his pre-match press conference, Arteta said he could still not watch the incident due to his emotional reaction.
So, that should all set us up for an enthralling lunchtime kick-off under the Newcastle sun. The hosts, though, will have to be at their best to take more points today, with this season so far proving a frustrating one form-wise. Well, that first half has been a tough watch at times. Isak’s header from Gordon’s cross was the only moment of real quality and deserved a goal.
Arsenal have struggled to knit much together in attack. Choice words from Arteta on the way back in the dressing room, no doubt.
