Unless Barcelona sanction player outgoings in the coming days, Marcus Rashford will miss out on his desired transfer.

Indeed, the Manchester United No.10’s links with Barcelona have hinged on the club freeing up space in their wage list to welcome him on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

One of the prime candidates expected to leave the Blaugrana this month was ex-Manchester City defender Eric Garcia, who has started only four La Liga matches under Hansi Flick this campaign.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed that he was in talks with Como over a potential switch at the beginning of the week, with all parties ‘very close’ to reaching a full agreement. However, when Garcia provided a crucial goal in Barcelona’s emphatic 5-4 turnaround in the Champions League away to Benfica on Tuesday, he earned a heap of credit in the bank with his manager.

Now, the 24-year-old is almost certain to be staying put, with Como boss Cesc Fabregas telling reporters on Friday: “Eric Garcia won’t join us – no chance. Especially after the goal he has scored against Benfica.”

Wherever Rashford will turn next remains to be seen. Thursday night’s win over Rangers marked the 10th successive game that he was omitted from the team by Ruben Amorim, yet he still showed up to Old Trafford in club gear to show his support for his teammates.

AC Milan were believed to be leading the race for his signature heading into the window, but instead pursued City wantaway Kyle Walker to fulfil their only remaining non-EU spot.

Should he fail to seal a move elsewhere before the February 3 deadline, Amorim must decide whether he will restore Rashford to his squad or continue leaving a £325,000-a-week player out of the fold – therefore driving down his transfer value with each passing week.
