Having a solid backline is important for Aston Villa, as is the case for any club. The key to this can often be having solid options at fullback. Lucas Digne at left-back is proving to be equal to what's asked of the position.

Throughout the game against Preston North End, the LB was constantly proving to be a force, joining in the attack. With two assists on the day and good service from the left, the Frenchman showed one of Unai Emery's great options when his side has the ball.

Having someone who can run up and down the flank and consistently set up teammates is not something that everyone can boast. His technical ability and vision within the speed of the game to find teammates continue to be a strong asset for Villa.

While working extra in the buildup to the FA Cup quarter-final match, his efforts and dedication have not gone unnoticed at Bodymoor Heath. Setting the tone here and then putting together a good performance on an important stage shows why Emery trusts the French international on the outside.

His tenacity and constant pressure on the opposition are a strong presence for Villa as they push forward in the closing weeks of the season. Ian Maatsen would back himself to be part of the starting XI. If Digne continues to play at this level and set up his teammates, it will be difficult for his Dutch counterpart to start from the opening whistle at his preferred position.

There are, however, a number of games, and overall depth throughout the lineup is important. Even if Digne finds himself on the bench to begin in the near future, it would more likely be Emery preserving the health of all of his players. It's important to not overextend any single player too much while also ensuring everyone who has enough quality to be in the lineup gets a good run of games. For now, it appears that Digne has solidified the starting left-back role for Aston Villa.
