The renewal spree at FC Barcelona continues as veteran defender Inigo Martinez has now signed a new contract with the club, furthering his stay until 2026.
An agreement over an extension had been reached as early as January but the announcement had to be postponed due to Fair Play margin issues.
But with La Liga giving their approval to the new contract earlier today, following the sale of Vitor Roque, the Blaugrana have now made it official.
“FC Barcelona has exercised the option to extend the contract of first team player Inigo Martinez, who will remain linked to the Club until June 30, 2026,” the club statement read.
“The agreement between both parties had been closed for months, but was pending his registration in the Professional Football League (LFP).
“FC Barcelona wants to publicly express its satisfaction after securing the continuity of the Basque defender for another season.”
Martinez, 33, signed for Barcelona in the summer of 2023, but endured a stop-start debut season due to fitness problems.
This year, though, the veteran Spaniard has become an integral part of the team under Hansi Flick.
Indeed, the former Athletic Club centre-back was a permanent fixture in defence and one of Barcelona’s most consistent performers until getting injured in the Super Cup final last month.
Martinez’s previous contract stood to expire in 2025 but it had an option for a one-year extension until 2026 if he played a certain number of matches this season – which he was very much on track to achieving.
However, given his importance to the team and performances this season, Barcelona decided to offer him a new and improved one-year extension altogether instead of waiting for the option to be activated.
