The news most people were expecting has officially been confirmed – Tottenham Hotspur’s Rodrigo Bentancur has been hit with a seven game domestic ban for his comments on South Korean people back in June of this year. The 27-year old has also been handed a £100k fine.

In case you missed it, Bentancur will miss the following Spurs games; Manchester City (away), Fulham (home), AFC Bournemouth (away), Chelsea (home), Southampton (away), Manchester United (home, Carabao Cup), and Liverpool (home).

The final game against Liverpool is on the 22nd of December, so the midfielder will be back from suspension for the four games in ten days from boxing day until the third round of the FA Cup.

As mentioned above, the ban is a domestic one, so Bentancur will be available for the Europa League games at home to AS Roma on the 28th of November, and away to Rangers on the 12th of December, in between the domestic games that he will not be playing in.

This certainly helps, as he will be able to keep his match sharpness up to an extent, which will help be prepared for the aforementioned four games in 12 days when he is back. Furthermore, Bentancur has also been in action for the Uruguay national team.

On Friday night, he played the whole game as his side beat Colombia 3-2 in dramatic fashion, conceding an equaliser in the 96th minute, just to score in the 101st minute themselves.

There is another game coming up too, as they face Brazil in the early hours of Wednesday morning GMT. This is another good opportunity for him to get some minutes in the legs and keep that match sharpness and fitness up.

Whilst this is of course a frustrating outcome, and seen by many as unfair, unjust, and not in line with the punishment shown to other players for the same, or even worse words used, the one good thing is that there is finally some clarity on it.

It is common knowledge that these comments were made back in June, and almost immediately there was talk of Bentancur being hit with a ban. Five months ago. The possibility of a ban became concrete back in September, and another two months have passed before a decision was made.

Not having the worry of a pending ban looming over his head should help Bentancur’s performances now too – he was already playing fairly well as it was. He will be itching for the Roma game to come around, no doubt.
