Pundit compares prospective Blades takeover to Wrexham and Birmingham situations

Sheffield United owner and former Saudi sports minister Prince Abdullah remains hopeful that a takeover of the club can be completed.

That's according to the Sheffield Star, who report that the framework for a deal is in place, and that a price has been agreed, while the EFL have approved the Blades' prospective owners.

As revealed by Bloomberg, an American consortium led by private equity executive Steven H. Rosen are the group currently in talks with Prince Abdullah to purchase the Bramall Lane outfit.

Bloomberg also reported that the Blades have been up for sale since at least May 2023, so supporters may be anxious to see the potential takeover of their club take place sooner rather than later.

Meanwhile, fellow Football League sides Wrexham and Birmingham City have both been subject to takeovers by American owners in recent years, and are reaping the rewards with the Red Dragons sitting second in League One, while the Blues lead the way in the third tier.

Football League World asked pundit Carlton Palmer if Blades fans should be excited by the prospect of an American takeover given the recent successes of both the Red Dragons and Blues.

Palmer said: "Whether this is good news for Sheffield United fans, we'll have to wait and see, because it's still currently unclear.

"Sheffield United have been up for sale since at least May 2023.

"There have been some interested parties, but nothing's got over the line.

"The latest interested party is an American consortium led by Steven Rosen, the Resilience Capital Partners co-founder.

"Apparently, he's in talks with a group of investors.

"The consortium plan to invest capital in the player trade (transfer) market in January to boost the team's chance of winning promotion to the Premier League.

"Whether it's reason to be optimistic (remains to be seen).

"Obviously, Sheffield United are top of the league.

"For anybody potentially looking to buy a club, you'd want a club like Sheffield United, that has got great facilities, they've got a new training ground that's being built, they've got a great pitch, great stadium.

"This would be the one to be excited about, because Sheffield United would sit top of the league, had they not been deducted two points.

"Chris Wilder has done magnificently well with the situation being the way it is.

"Obviously, if they can get this over the line, and Chris Wilder's allowed to go and invest in the squad, because he is tied to the ground, he's got a lot of youngsters on the bench.

"When he's got his full 11 out, he's got a very, very strong side, but outside his full 11 he's got a lot of young players.

"So if he can get some investment, Sheffield United would be back in the Premier League.

"Given what's happened at Birmingham City, given what's happened at Wrexham, I think it's a little bit different to Birmingham City, and Wrexham, because Wrexham have been bought out by two people, Birmingham City have been bought out by an individual.

"When it's a group takeover, I'm not sure how that's going to work out, but it's movement for optimism, because Chris Wilder would surely want to strengthen his side, come the January transfer market and give them every chance of getting promotion."

A takeover would boost Blades promotion chances

It seems that Rosen and fellow members of his consortium are intent on investing in the Blades squad, should they complete their takeover of the club prior to the January transfer window.

As stated by Palmer, the Blades are already a side who would be top of the Championship table, had they not been subject to a two-point deduction.

The South Yorkshire side have won three of their last four games, and have kept six consecutive clean sheets, which epitomises their promotion-clinching potential.

Furthermore, Wilder's squad also boasts the likes of striker Kieffer Moore, who has previously won promotion from the second tier to the Premier League with both Bournemouth, and more recently Ipswich Town, as well as former Coventry City stars Gus Hamer and Callum O'Hare.

Investment in the squad in January has the potential to make the Blades comfortable favourites to win the Championship title, and we could see all three of Wrexham, Birmingham and the South Yorkshire outfit achieve promotion at the end of the season under the stewardship of American owners.
