Liverpool’s goalkeeping department looks set for a significant shake-up this summer, as reported by The Athletic, with Caoimhin Kelleher nearing the Anfield exit door. At 26 and with just over a year remaining on his contract, Kelleher represents both a reliable talent and a valuable financial asset for the Reds, who are now poised to cash in.
With Arne Slot at the helm following a Premier League-winning debut season, the direction of the club is clear. The signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia for a reported £29 million – £25 million plus £4 million in add-ons – all but confirmed that Kelleher’s days as Alisson Becker’s understudy are numbered.
Kelleher has been one of Liverpool’s most dependable deputies in recent memory. Despite limited opportunities, his performances have rarely faltered. The Irish international made 20 appearances during the 2024/25 season while Alisson was out injured, demonstrating the quality expected of a Premier League starter.
Nevertheless, with Giorgi Mamardashvili arriving at Anfield on July 1, 2025, Liverpool’s goalkeeping hierarchy is poised for recalibration. The club’s decision to invest in the Georgian keeper reflects a strategic shift – one that leaves Kelleher surplus to requirements.

More importantly, this summer is Liverpool’s final chance to command a significant fee for the Cork native, whose current deal runs until June 2026. Having joined the Reds’ academy in 2015, any transfer fee secured will represent “pure profit” – a phrase used in the original report to highlight the club’s potential windfall.
Despite interest from several Premier League clubs including Aston Villa, Leeds United and Newcastle, it appears St James’ Park will not be his next destination.
As The Athletic’s Chris Waugh noted:
“James Trafford is the top goalkeeper target as things stand, although he is not the only one.”“Kelleher has also regularly been linked and has Premier League experience, but I have not heard that he is high on the wanted list.”
This update effectively rules out Newcastle, narrowing the field of realistic suitors. While there is still significant interest from clubs in need of a quality, Premier League-experienced goalkeeper, Kelleher’s next move will likely hinge on two factors: guaranteed playing time and Champions League ambitions.
The Republic of Ireland’s national team manager, Heimir Hallgrimsson, did not mince words regarding Kelleher’s future:
“I just want Caoimhin to go to a club where he will play on a regular level. He has been playing at the highest level, whether it’s the Champions League or the EPL and done really well.”

“Caoimhin has spoken about it himself, but I don’t mind where he goes so long as he is playing on a regular basis because he is too good not to be playing.”
His sentiment echoes what many Liverpool fans believe: Kelleher has outgrown his backup role. With his talent and temperament, he deserves a platform to establish himself as a No.1.
Caoimhin Kelleher’s likely departure is bittersweet for Liverpool fans. On the one hand, it’s a clear signal that the club is evolving under Arne Slot, with forward-looking recruitment like Mamardashvili indicating a proactive transfer strategy. On the other, it’s hard to ignore what the Reds are losing.
Kelleher has been a model professional, often stepping in seamlessly when Alisson was unavailable. His heroics in domestic cup competitions and steady hands in high-pressure moments will not be forgotten. His contribution may have been in the shadows, but it was integral nonetheless.
There’s also a genuine sense of admiration among supporters for his loyalty and maturity. He never publicly complained, never caused disruption. But now, after over a decade at Liverpool, few would begrudge him a move to cement his status as a first-choice keeper elsewhere.
From a business standpoint, selling a homegrown talent for £30 million is an outstanding piece of business. It frees up funds and maintains a sustainable model – something Liverpool pride themselves on. But from a human perspective, this move is about more than money. It’s about doing right by a player who has done everything asked of him and more.
Whoever lands Kelleher will be getting not only a technically solid and composed goalkeeper but also a leader who has quietly learned from the best and is now ready to stand in the spotlight.
