Manchester United head coach Marc Skinner said that his side’s 2-0 victory over Leicester City was one of their most important wins of the season so far.

Victory at the Leigh Sports Village saw The Red Devils make progress in their quest to win a first Barclays Women’s Super League title.

When speaking to the media after the match, Manchester United boss Skinner highlighted the importance of the victory just days after the international break.

“It wasn’t a good second half,” Skinner said. “In all honesty, I did expect a little bit of that; we’ve had the players back for two days, some of them only one. Today was just about grinding out a result which I felt we did. I feel that this is probably our most important win of the season for the simple reason that I knew we’d be not high-energy after the international break.”

Melvine Malard and Leah Galton netted the goals for Manchester United while midfielder Ella Toone again caught the eye with a performance which impressed her coach.

“We challenged Tooney because of her ability to pivot forward quicker and she’s done that perfectly for both goals,” Skinner said. “Really, she assisted the assist for the second as well, but it’s Mal who does the work.

“I think it’s an incredible finish considering Mal hasn’t played in the nine for us a lot. I think the second goal was just a lovely counter move where Tooney turns again, pivots, faces forward and then Leah’s great invasion. Two very good goals in a forgettable match is probably the way that I’d put it.”

Manchester United took a two-goal lead into the half-time break but opponents Leicester City had the better of the second half. Skinner said that his players were disappointed with their showing after the interval.

He said “Second half, we weren’t good enough. What I loved about the group was that at the end of the game, they were fuming about that second half. If we’d played a team that was probably in a better space, they might have taken something from the game. I think we gave Leicester too many chances in the second half.

“We had to win it and that leaves us with more points than we had last season with seven games to go; seven wins-in-a-row and ten clean sheets already this part of the season, so there are loads of positives.”

Manchester United are next in action on Saturday evening when they host Sunderland in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup quarter-finals.
