Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has reacted to head coach Ruben Amorim describing his current squad as possibly the worst in the club’s history, insisting it will not cause the players to lose faith in the Portuguese or adversely affect performance on the pitch, according to the Guardian.

The Red Devils suffered their tenth Premier League defeat of 2024-25 at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday at Old Trafford, and the 3-1 loss left Amorim far from pleased.

Man United have won thrice in 11 league games since the Portuguese replaced Erik ten Hag last November, and he admitted his squad are not up to the required level.

They really could do with a major squad overhaul going forward, but it will take a couple of transfer windows and major players’ sales for the club to return to the desired heights the fans have been craving since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013.

The likes of Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo are all available for sale, with the attacking duo both expected to leave during the ongoing January window.

More players will be moving on in the summer and Amorim will hope to build a squad capable of playing how he wants going forward, starting with the next transfer window.

Man United need to balance the books and comply with the Profitability and Sustainability Rules of the Premier League to get the right players in, but failure to qualify for the Champions League will deal a huge blow on their finances and ability to spend.

A top-four finish this term already looks like a foregone conclusion, and they need plenty of improvement on the pitch to qualify for the Europa League or Conference League.

Amorim has a huge rebuilding job on his hands, and he will need to prove his mettle quickly if he wants to convince Ratcliffe that he is the best man to take Man United to the next level.
