Manchester United have been informed that Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie is ready to join a European giant.

The 23-year-old is an Ecuadorian defender who started his career in his home country with Independiente before making the move to Argentina through the gates of CA Talleres in 2020. A year later, he landed on the European stage when Leverkusen pounced for his signature.

Despite his tender age at the time, the left-footed defender swiftly made waves in Germany, cementing himself as a key player at the back for the Bundesliga club. Last season, he was a pillar in Xabi Alonso’s team that went on to clinch the league title while remaining undefeated throughout the campaign, thus ending Bayern Munich’s 11-year reign of terror over German football.

Therefore, Hincapie’s exploits surely didn’t go unnoticed, and Man Utd have been closely tracking his development. The Premier League giants reportedly enquired about the Ecuadorian last summer, but learned that he would cost them £50 million. In the end, the club ended up splashing the cash on Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt.

Nevertheless, the Leverkusen man remains one to keep an eye on, as he continues to produce the goods in Germany.

Moreover, his agent, Manuel Serra revealed that the player is now ready to make the next big step in his career, indirectly inviting his suitors to lunge forward.

“Basically, Piero is a warrior. He’s a leader. He is, for me, the best left central defender in the world. One of the best left-backs and the best hybrid players for sure,” said Serra in his interview with CaughtOffisde.

“I mean, he needs – or he deserves to – play in the world’s best places. He’s very happy in Bayer but he’s ready for the next step.

“He is also very good at playmaking. He just likes to win like nothing else, you know? He competes for win all the time, even when he hasn’t played that often. He’s a warrior, but above all, he is a very good person; nice person and humble guy who knows where he comes from.”

Hincapie could offer competition for Lisando Martinez who currently occupies the left side in Ruben Amorim’s three-man backline, but hasn’t always been impressive in this role.
