Following Real Madrid’s defeat to Barcelona in the Copa Del Rey final, Carlo Ancelotti looks all set to depart Santiago Bernabeu in the near future.
It is no secret that Real Madrid have earmarked Xabi Alonso as the ideal replacement for the Italian. However, when exactly the Spaniard can sign a contract remains to be seen.
Sky Sports journalist Patrick Berger (h/t Werkself Xtra) has offered an update on the future of Xabi Alonso amid interest from Real Madrid.
It appears Leverkusen are expecting a final decision on Alonso’s future sometime this week. The general feeling is that the Spaniard will leave the club at the end of the season.
Leverkusen themselves have likely readied for a potential exit of Alonso. But the club want a clarification soon, as they want to finalise a replacement as well.

Reports suggest Alonso has been helping Leverkusen find an ideal replacement, with the likes of Sebastian Hoeness and Imanol Alguacil emerging as potential options.
As for Real Madrid, there have been slight question marks and doubts creeping in over Alonso due to his lack of experience in managing a top club.
That is exactly why Real Madrid have also approached Jurgen Klopp. But it is unlikely the German would want to move out so soon after joining the Red Bull franchise.
Xabi Alonso, therefore, remains in pole position to become the next Real Madrid manager, although it is imperative that the club make a final decision sooner rather than later.
For now, Ancelotti is still the head coach for Real Madrid and will likely remain so, at least until Barcelona take on Real Madrid once again in La Liga’s Clasico at Montjuic on May 11.
