It was certainly not Trent Alexander-Arnold’s best performance at Anfield against Manchester United last night.

The talented full-back, who is known for his attacking prowess when Liverpool have possession, struggled defensively throughout the match.

In fact, the right side of Liverpool’s defence became a major weak spot that Ruben Amorim’s United took full advantage of to score their goals.

This, combined with questions about his future at the club, led to heavy criticism from pundits and former players alike.

Criticism from the legends

Man Utd legend Roy Keane, speaking during half-time, did not hold back. He noted that while Trent is often praised for his attacking abilities, his defensive performance was poor on the day.

“It’s too easy. We talk about how brilliant Trent is in attack, but today Trent defending… My God, he looks like a schoolboy,” he said as quoted by MARCA.

Keane didn’t stop there, taking aim at rumours linking Alexander-Arnold with a move to Real Madrid.

He sarcastically suggested that if the right-back’s defensive performance didn’t improve, he might find himself playing for a much smaller club like Tranmere Rovers rather than a top-tier side like Real Madrid.

“There is talk that he will go to Real Madrid. The way he defends, after this he will go to Tranmere Rovers. He has to do better.”

Jamie Carragher’s thoughts

Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool player, also joined in the criticism, pointing out how much was going wrong for Liverpool on the right side. He added that Real Madrid might want to reconsider any interest in Alexander-Arnold after this display.

“There’s too much going on down the right for Liverpool. There’s been a lot of talk before this game, but for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Real Madrid better not be watching,” he said.

January move unilkely

Despite these criticisms, it’s clear that Liverpool are doing everything they can to secure Alexander-Arnold’s future at the club.

In an effort to keep him, the Premier League side has offered a lucrative five-year deal worth €93 million, which would see him earn €18.6 million per year.

While it’s unlikely that Alexander-Arnold will leave in January, the situation could change in the summer when he will be available for a free transfer. For now, Liverpool are holding firm in their efforts to convince the right-back to stay.
