Alphonso Davies’s arrival at Real Madrid is almost taken for granted at this point. After all, the club have been in his pursuit for over a year now and the player has been holding off serious pressure from Bayern Munich to complete the move of his dreams.

The Canadian international has reportedly reached an agreement with Real Madrid in recent days and the deal is as good as done. While his agent has publicly denied the news, it has come to light that his words were out of a lack of another option.

If Los Blancos have indeed pulled off Davies’ signing on a free transfer, it will go down as one of the biggest steals of the summer transfer window in 2025. It does, however, bring with it a unique set of problems.

Overstocked in the department

As revealed by MARCA, Davies’ arrival brings a natural and obvious complication to Real Madrid’s plans – a gross overstaffing at left-back.

Carlo Ancelotti already has two quality players at his disposal in the position in Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia, but Davies will undoubtedly leapfrog the duo and arrive as a starter.

Maintaining three players in the department is simply not feasible, and the Spanish outlet thus reveals that at least one must leave the club in June.

The club will listen to offers for both players, but it is highly uncertain as to which player they will prefer to let go of and the administration is in a dilemma.

At first sight, it would appear obvious to keep the more established of the two, Mendy, and let go of the weaker link in the team in Garcia.

Concurrently, however, one must take into account that keeping two players who both aspire to be starters often does not go down well, and Mendy is unlikely to be happy about a bench role. Garcia, on the other hand, has been more than happy to play second fiddle.

Another sequela of the entire transaction is around the future of Miguel Gutierrez who has been linked with a return to the club. Should Davies arrive, the option of bringing the player back from Girona is completely ruled out.
