Eintracht Frankfurt could block the sale of Hugo Ekitike if the club qualify for the Champions League this season.
Ekitike is a target for several Premier League teams after an excellent first full season in Frankfurt. The Frenchman has scored 19 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions, following his €16.5m arrival from Paris Saint-Germain.
His performances have attracted interest from England with Arsenal, Spurs, Manchester United and Newcastle United among the clubs credited with interest. The 22-year-old is valued at around €80m (£66.8m) by the Bundesliga side. who had been expected to cash in on Ekitike this summer.
However, Sky Germany are reporting that Frankfurt will only ‘need to sell one top star’ if the club secure Champions League qualification. Currently third in the Bundesliga, Frankfurt have a five-point advantage over fifth-placed Borussia Monchengladbach.
The additional revenue generated from the Champions League will strengthen Frankfurt’s position on sales. There is also understood to be interest from the Premier League in midfielder Hugo Larsson.
Frankfurt may only need to sell one key figure if Champions League football is secured. Participation alone would secure the club around £21m, which could rise to around £50m with progress to the last 16.
Should Ekitike be sold, Frankfurt will pursue a deal for Jonathan Burkardt. The 24-year-old has scored 15 league goals for a Mainz side bidding to secure Champions League football for the first time. Bayern Munich are also monitoring the Germany international.
Frankfurt are reportedly weighing up an offer of around €20m for Burkardt, who is considering his future at Mainz amid interest from rival clubs.
