Ferran Torres is enjoying a fine run of form at FC Barcelona in recent weeks, firmly putting himself as a contender for one of the attacking positions in the starting lineup.

Even though he has largely been used as an impact substitute, the 24-year-old has proven himself capable of being trusted as a starter – as was witnessed in the Copa del Rey win against Valencia earlier this month when he scored a brilliant hat-trick.

Why did Ferran not play vs Sevilla?

However, after that stunning performance against Valencia, Ferran ended up not playing even a single minute in Sunday’s La Liga victory over Sevilla, raising eyebrows.

According to MARCA, it was planned for Torres to feature in some capacity at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan against Sevilla.

The Spaniard was not going to start due to the significant effort he put in during the Valencia match, having played the full 90 minutes only three days before. He needed a slight reduction in minutes to avoid overloading his legs.

As such, Hansi Flick’s plan was for Ferran to come on in the second half against the Andalusian outfit. However, he did not play at all.

As per the report, it was not because Flick did not want to give the ex-Manchester City forward playing time. Instead, it was a fully consensual decision made by the player, the coach, and the medical staff.

During the warm-up, Ferran felt some tightness in his hamstrings. He conveyed these sensations, and together they changed the initial plan of having him play in the second half.

Flick did not want to risk the forward playing and potentially getting injured. He considers him too important and believes his contributions will be crucial in the rest of the season, where titles are at stake. Thus, he preferred to leave him out rather than risk any mishaps.
