Inter and AC Milan will play for the first trophy of the season tonight at Al-Awwal Park in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and there is plenty at stake for both teams.
As La Repubblica (via MilanNews) reports this morning, two Milanese teams will face each other in a derby that will see not the usual three points at stake, but rather a trophy. Inter and Milan reached the final after having beaten Atalanta and Juventus in the semis respectively.
Many factors will come into play this evening. Inter will look to show why they are the reigning champions both in the league and in the Super Cup, while Milan will aim to snatch the crown from their neighbours and win a trophy that they haven’t since 2016.
The paper also speaks of a ‘jackpot derby’, given that in addition to the trophy this evening there is also a significant cash prize up for grabs. The team that will be defeated in the final will pocket €6.7m, but both have their eye on something bigger.
The winners of the game and therefore the competition will pocket €11m, also considering the €1.5m bonus from a friendly to be scheduled against the team that will then be the winner of the Saudi Super Cup.
In total, however, the overall turnover of the Super Cup that will end tonight is €29m: €23m of this come from the Saudi host committee, which Australia and the United States above all have tried to oust. Both failed miserably, given that the figures put on the table by the Saudis are difficult to match.
