During the winter transfer window, Paris Saint-Germain looked to offload players who no longer fit into their plans, and Marco Asensio was one of those on the move.
Since November 30, Asensio’s role at PSG has seen a sharp decline. The former Real Madrid forward lost his starting spot and only appeared as a substitute in a few matches.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Aston Villa reached an agreement to bring Asensio in on loan for the rest of the season. This move won’t affect Marcus Rashford’s potential loan to Villa, which may include an option to buy.
PSG are satisfied with the arrangement, as Villa will cover Asensio’s full wages. Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Villa will pay his salary in full until June, with no purchase option included in the deal.

On The Transfers Podcast, Duncan Castles discussed Asensio’s move to Aston Villa, revealing that the Villans turned down an option to buy for one key reason.
Castles explained that Villa rejected the buy option because PSG wanted a loan fee in return. He suggested that Villa was hesitant to agree to the fee due to tight PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) restrictions.
“A little detail in their negotiations last week in that they took Marco Asensio from Paris Saint-Germain on loan,” Castles said (h/t TBR Football). “Instead of Joao Félix, they had been offered the two players, Unai Emery keen on both of them, Félix going to Milan, Chelsea insisting that Milan pay 5.5 million euros as a loan fee, which was basically the amortization value of the five months you’ll spend at Milan.
“PSG allowing Asensio to go to Villa without a loan fee. Wages had to be paid in full. My guidance is that Villa asked for an option to buy, to be included in that deal, but refused to take one when PSG insisted that if you want an option to buy, you have to pay a loan fee in order to get it.
“So again, that suggests that Aston Villa, despite that big, big take on John Duran, are still tight on their financial headroom. And we can also look at the six clubs who got involved in those PSR swap deals in the summer. The ones you mentioned, Elliot Anderson, Omari Kellyman, etcetera.”
