Claudio Ranieri further confirmed that he wouldn’t stay on the Roma bench despite some whispers about the higher-ups trying to persuade him to stay. He chatted with the press during the Maurizio Maestrelli Award (via Sky).

“He was an extremely fair person. It’s my third one, and it’s very pleasing because he was a great coach who knew how to mesh his champions. His Lazio team won thanks to them and especially the man who put them together. Receiving this during a positive moment for my side is even nicer. The hard part will come now since the league is wide open. We have to keep being light and making the fans love us. As for me, I think that retiring is the right thing.”

Ranieri dished on how he revived Roma after two coaching changes and a terrible start.

“I focused on giving the lads self-esteem and positivity. I found a strong group, but they lacked that. I gave them what they deserved. Everybody made a big sacrifice, which is paying off through the results now. I’m not surprised because I’m always upbeat while doing my job and with the players at my disposal.”

The Giallorossi will have to cope without Paulo Dybala for a few games.

“We hope we’ll be even more compact since everybody needs to give something more without a star of his caliber.”

Ranieri commented on Artem Dovbyk, who’s having an up-and-down campaign and integration.

“I liked that the fans supported him and his teammates rushed to hug him after his last goal. He’s a very timid guy who needs affection and comprehension from all of us.”
