Romano: Chelsea will add “key player” in less than 4 months after disappointing January

It’s just over a week since the transfer window closed, and with the dust settled we can start to look back at the decisions made.

Some of them are already looking very dodgy indeed. The injuries to Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu have stripped us down up front, and there was no relief brought in to help out, despite a widespread clamour already in place thanks to Jackson’s struggles since Christmas.

Saving your money for the better options in the summer is a sensible one, and everything is easy in hindsight, but it was clear even from last summer that a Jackson-Guiu pair was risky at best and a potential disaster at worst. Of course it’s bad luck that both got injured at the same time, but bad luck is something you’ve got to account for.

Even if Guiu was still fit – would we really be comfortable with him as our sole number 9 for the next 2 months?

Romano promises midfielder’s arrival in 4 months

But in other parts of the team, things are becoming more clear. We didn’t buy a midfielder, despite needing one (well, we did, but Enzo Maresca has made it clear that he doesn’t consider Mathis Amougou a proper first team option yet). But the briefs sent out to people like Fabrizio Romano from the starting directors make it very clear that there’s a good reason for that – Andrey Santos is coming to town.

Many fans wanted him recalled in January, but the Brazilian is staying put to help Strasbourg, with Romano saying that he will be “part of the [Chelsea] team from June.”

Where will the team be by then? That is not so clear. Can Moises Caicedo’s hamstrings handle 3 and a half months more action with no help? We sure hope so. If he were to get injured now, we honestly dread to think how results would go.
