United on Monday announced plans to make up to 200 more redundancies in addition to 250 job cuts last year, as spending cutbacks continue under Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

The club is cutting costs amid financial problems at Old Trafford that have not been helped by the failings of the team.

Asked if the job losses emphasise the importance of success on the pitch, Amorim said on Tuesday: “That is clear.

“We have to, of course, address all the problems in the club. But one important piece of this moment is to understand how we got to this situation.

“It has a lot to do, I think, with the lack of success of the football team, because we are the engine of any football club.

“I just want to help the club in my department by improving the team and the players.”

Amorim added: “It is always hard for everybody. They see their friends and team-mates losing their jobs.

“But, again, we have to focus on what I can do to help the club in this moment. We as a club have to understand what we did wrong to get this situation. We need to think in solutions.”

Asked whether the tough financial decisions at board-level make his job harder, Amorim replied: “It’s hard enough!

“This year was really hard for everybody. We did, as a club, a lot of changes. When you make changes, if you have a team that are winning games it’s easier for the fans and everyone.

“But in this moment we are in the difficult period inside the club and on the pitch. We have to fight against this feeling and try our best to help the team to perform better.”
