Manchester United got outplayed and outfought by relegation candidates Wolverhampton Wanderers who eventually emerged 2-0 victors at Molineux on Thursday.

This was the Red Devils’ fifth loss in December and new coach Ruben Amorim has only managed to win seven points from a possible 21 since his appointment, with former boss Erik ten Hag accruing more points in his final seven games in charge.

Alarm bells are ringing at Old Trafford and a real relegation scrap could be on the cards unless the head coach compromises with his vision to a certain exit.

Currently, the squad does not look equipped to deal with Amorim’s methods with so many players looking like fish out of water in the 3-4-3 system, especially skipper Bruno Fernandes.

Bruno has struggled under Amorim

The Portugal international received his third red card of the season against Wolves and looked lost out on the left of the front three.

He has also been tried at the base of the midfield, but the club captain does not possess the discipline to play in that position and currently, the 30-year-old does not look like a natural fit in Amorim’s system.

On the other hand, Matheus Cunha stole the show as the left-sided No 10 on Thursday, showing exactly how to operate in a similar system.

He dropped deep to link-up play, made the right choice of pass more often than not and eventually made the telling contribution in the game, scoring directly from a corner while also grabbing the assist for the second goal.

The performance was so good that as per Fichajes, Amorim has asked the board to go out and acquire the Brazilian in January itself.

The 25-year-old can play all across the frontline and even in midfield, and has netted 10 goals this term while also registering four assists from 17 starts.

“Matheus Cunha, the Brazilian striker for Wolverhampton Wanderers, has caught the attention of Manchester United after his outstanding performance in recent months in the Premier League.

Cunha could be the perfect fit

“His level of play, characterized by his technical ability, field vision and ability to define, has positioned him as one of the most in-form attackers in the English championship.

“This performance has not gone unnoticed by Rúben Amorim , the Red Devils’ coach, who has requested his incorporation for the January transfer market.”

However, cracking a deal in the winter will be easier said than done. The West Midlands outfit had paid €50 million for his services in 2023 and will likely demand close to double based on his importance to Wolves.

The Red Devils do not have that level of finances to conclude a deal in the winter. It will be interesting to see if INEOS go after the former Atletico Madrid star in the summer should he continue to dazzle in the remainder of the season.
