Liverpool just love this Champions League competition and format don’t they! A 100% record carries onto match-day eight and ensures they’ll finish in the top spots. It was largely calm at Anfield, aside from the one poor minute but normal service was very quickly resumed.
It was a great night for attackers who had a left foot and the supporting cast got more of a chance to stake their claim. This wasn’t remotely s exciting as Saturday, but there was so much to like again. We look at the lessons learned from a Tuesday night victory over Lille.
He’ll genuinely be gutted he didn’t get a couple on this one, as he certainly had the chances. The Egyptian king made sure that Curtis Jones paid him back for the Eden Hazard comments as he latched onto a brilliantly weighted through ball and lifted it over the Lille keeper for the opener.
It was his 50th Champions League goal and now means he’s 10th in the all time-list and level with Thierry Henry. The one where he brought it down, held off the defender from a run and clipped it just wide could have been brilliant. That’s another apparent mini-drought over.

We needed his magic on Saturday and we got some again in this one. Having been key to both late goals against Brentford on Saturday, Harvey Elliott got considerably longer in this one. He was still only on for one half, but he brought an energy and craft to the game that was sadly lacking at the time.
A couple of brilliant through balls and links with others brought ripples of applause and no-one will greatly care that his winner was deflected. It was the least he deserved and another reminder to Arne Slot of his talents and ability to make an impact.
It wasn’t exactly what many wanted and the fact that Van Dijk and Salah played 90 mins wasn’t brilliant. However, there were a few for Liverpool that got some rest. It was clearly pre-planned that Gravenberch and Mac Allister would do a half each. Trent played the very last few minutes and after what he admitted in the press conference, it was pleasing Ibou got the night off. Szoboszlai also came off early enough to allow Endo and Chiesa to enjoy a few minutes. The only hope is that Diaz and Jones are completely fine and it’s a good nights work.
