San Diego FC vs. LA Galaxy projected lineups

Mikey Varas' San Diego group has played almost exclusively in a 4-3-3. It's still managing a few injuries, the most notable of those to Marcus Ingvartsen.

Emma Boateng is the latest to join the ranks of the unavailable this week after featuring as a substitute in last weekend's 0-0 draw at home against Sporting Kansas City.

Meanwhile, to say it's been a rough season for the still-winless defending MLS Cup champions is an understatement. But while 2024 team MVP Riqui Puig is still probably a couple of months away from returning from a torn ACL, Greg Vanney's squad is otherwise about as healthy as it's been all season.

And in rallying to a 2-2 draw against LAFC last weekend, there may be something to build on. So the lineup will probably look similar to the one that took the field last Sunday evening.

San Dieg FC projected lineup (4-3-3, right to left)

C.J. dos Santos (GK) - Oscar Verhoeven, Paddy McNair, Luca Bombino - Anibal Godoy, Jeppe Tverskov, Luca de la Torre - Alex Mighten, Anders Dreyer, Hirving Lozano

LA Galaxy projected lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left)

John McCarthy (GK) - Miki Yamane, Carlos Garces, Maya Yoshida, John Nelson - Edwin Cerillo, Lucas Sanabria - Gabriel Pec, Marco Reus, Joseph Paintsil - Christian Ramirez

Player status report

San Diego FC: Emmanuel Boateng - lower body (out), Hamady Diop - lower body (out), Marcus Ingvartsen - lower body (out) Andrés Reyes - lower body (out). LA Galaxy: Riqui Puig - knee (out).

San Diego FC vs. LA Galaxy prediction

The form book suggests this should be an easy victory for the home side, but if Marco Reus begins performing like he has in his last two matches, the Galaxy will be much better in their last 20 matches than in their first 14.

And even in their first 14, they've been in most of their matches even if they haven't managed to win one: Nine of those either finished level or in a one-goal defeat.

San Diego still probably has enough quality to win at home. But they will have to work for it, perhaps wth a singular play from Mexican star Hirving Lozano making the difference.
