At the start of the January window, the midfield was mentioned as one of the priorities for AC Milan. However, as most of the budget seemingly will be spent on a striker, the Rossoneri have re-evaluated their situation in the centre of the pitch.

Prior to Ismael Bennacer’s return from injury, Youssouf Fofana and Tijjani Reijnders were heavily overworked in the midfield tandem. The situation has improved in recent weeks but one could argue that it still isn’t ideal, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek recovering from an injury.

According to Nico Schira, Milan are ‘very satisfied’ with the performances of Bennacer and his dedication to regaining top match condition. As such, the midfield is no longer a priority and will likely only be reinforced if faced with an opportunity they cannot refuse.

The belief is that having Youssouf Fofana, Ismael Bennacer, Yunus Musah and Tijjani Reijnders will be enough. Of course, these four have still been working very hard in recent weeks as there have been injuries in other positions, forcing Musah to play on the right for example.

It’s clear that this shift in priority has to do with Milan’s pursuit of Santiago Gimenez, as they will need to fork out around €40m to land the striker this month.
