Artem Dovbyk’s solo strike was not enough to revitalise troubled Roma, as Dany Mota Carvalho gave injury-ravaged Monza a point.

The Giallorossi were still getting to grips with new coach Ivan Juric, winning both Serie A games, but smarting from Thursday’s 1-0 Europa League defeat to Elfsborg. Paulo Dybala and Mats Hummels joined Enzo Le Fée and Alexis Saelemaekers on the treatment table. Monza had a real injury crisis, missing Andrea Petagna, Stefano Sensi, Alessio Cragno, Patrick Ciurria, Roberto Gagliardini and Samuele Vignato. Stefano Turati was a last-minute absentee with a bruised hand, so Semuel Pizzignacco stepped in as third choice.

Roma dominated possession early on and had the ball in the net on 15 minutes when Manu Koné thumped the base of the upright from the edge of the area and Artem Dovbyk pounced on the rebound, but the Ukrainian was offside.

Monza almost scored moments later, as Matteo Pessina knocked down Alessandro Bianco’s cross for a Daniel Maldini first-time finish, forcing a big save from Mile Svilar.

Stephan El Shaarawy added to the injury list, so Nicola Zalewski made his comeback after being frozen out for turning down the Galatasaray transfer in September.

Lorenzo Pellegrini drilled inches wide from the edge of the box, then again moments later when running onto the Bryan Cristante slide-rule pass, while Pizzignacco got down to fingertip a Koné strike just off target.

Pellegrini tested the goalkeeper after the restart on a Dovbyk lay-off, then the Ukrainian turned over during a give and go with Soulé.

The deadlock was finally broken with a Dovbyk solo effort. The big summer signing sprung the offside trap on Cristante’s through ball, shrugged off Armando Izzo, cut inside past two defenders trying to throw themselves in his way and drilled home from 10 yards.

However, Monza equalised as Daniel Maldini sent Andrea Carboni down the left, his ball was flashed across the face of goal and Svilar only fingertipped it, allowing substitute Dany Mota Carvalho to tap in at the back post.

Koné had two opportunities from very promising positions only to bend them both wide of the far stick. Tommaso Baldanzi had Roma penalty appeals rejected when he and Kyriakopoulos were both watching the ball and collided heavily, while Pizzignacco came flying out to head a long ball away from Dovbyk.

Deep into stoppages, Roma threatened with Pisilli’s effort charged down and the Kone’ follow-up over.
