Sheffield Wednesday are hoping to beat rivals Sheffield United to the loan signing of Southampton's Shea Charles.
Sheffield Wednesday believe they have offered a better package to Southampton as they look to bring Shea Charles back to the club amid interest from rivals Sheffield United.
The 21-year-old joined the Owls in the summer on loan from Saints, and he has established himself as a key figure in Danny Rohl’s side over the first half of the campaign.
Therefore, it was a huge blow when it was confirmed that Southampton had triggered the break clause to bring the player back, with his final game in blue-and-white, as it stands, coming against Bristol City this evening.
However, it seems unlikely that Charles is going to go into the first-team of the Premier League strugglers, so another move is on the cards.
Given his quality, Wednesday would love to bring him back, but it was reported that Sheffield United want to sign the Northern Ireland international as well.
Yet, in a fresh development, journalist Alan Nixon has suggested a return to Hillsborough is more likely as it stands.
He states that Southampton are ready to let Charles leave on loan if they get a suitable financial offer, and the update claims that Wednesday have ‘upped’ their offer, which they believe is more than the Blades.
Charles’ time with Wednesday has been hugely beneficial for the player, as he really has developed over the last few months.
There was a lot of excitement at Southampton when they paid big-money to sign Charles from Man City, and whilst he contributed to Russell Martin’s side as they won promotion last season, he didn’t get the game time he would’ve wanted.
But, at Wednesday, he was a key figure, and it makes sense that the club are doing all they can to ensure he returns to the club.
Equally so, you can understand why he is attracting interest from others, and he would be a major improvement to Chris Wilder’s squad, which has been stretched.
From Southampton’s perspective, it’s about getting the best offer financially, but they will also want Charles to play week in, week out.
So, it’s one to monitor in the coming days, but whoever does land Charles will be making a shrewd signing.
This update is obviously positive for Wednesday, and the fans will no doubt show their appreciation to Charles tonight, with the player having seemed to enjoy his time at Hillsborough.
