Premier League legend Alan Shearer has named Chelsea star Moises Caicedo in his Team of the Week following an exceptional performance against Brentford.

Given their current form, the Blues went into the London derby as overwhelming favourites to claim maximum points, but it was never going to be a cakewalk.

Chelsea had lost their last three consecutive home games against the Bees by a combined scoreline of 8-1, so the pressure was on Enzo Maresca’s side to halt that awful record and maintain their title charge.

The Blues delivered as goals from Marc Cucurella and Nicolas Jackson ensured Bryan Mbeumo’s late scare was only a consolation in the 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues had to be at their best, but one player who stood out for Shearer was Caicedo.

The Ecuadorian produced a masterclass to ensure Brentford left the bridge empty-handed on their fourth visit since returning to the top flight.

The former Newcastle United striker wrote: “Chelsea’s midfield enforcer stood out again, winning tackles and regaining possession time and again in Brentford’s half. Thomas Frank’s side just couldn’t get out.”

Caicedo, who was described as ‘world class‘ by ex-Chelsea boss Graham Potter, put in a man-of-the-match performance.

He recorded 84 touches and two key passes while completing three out of four long balls. He also won six duels and made four interceptions and two tackles.

The 23-year-old has been a mainstay in the middle of the park for Chelsea since his record-breaking £115 million move from Brighton & Hove Albion.

He has gone up a notch from his days at the Amex Stadium and is a vital cog in Maresca’s midfield.

His three-goal contributions in 16 Premier League games don’t do justice to the role he plays in the middle of the park.

He’s already a shoo-in for Player of the Season as Chelsea continue to pile the pressure on Liverpool at the Premier League summit.

The win against Brentford took them to within two points of the Reds, albeit having played a game more.

Maresca insists the Blues are not ready to compete for the title, but they have shown they have what it takes to push Liverpool all the way.
