Mohamed Salah’s spectacular season has helped Liverpool to the top of the Premier League table.
The Egyptian has 17 goals and 13 assists for the campaign and counting, following another devastating display at West Ham at the weekend. Salah’s remarkable run has seen him directly involved in 30 of Liverpool’s 45 goals scored this season – a whopping 67%.
But are Arne Slot’s side too reliant on the 32-year-old’s brilliance?
We’ve looked at the players with the highest percentage of goal involvement in a Premier League title-winning team.
Jamie Vardy’s goals helped fire one of the sport’s greatest-ever shocks in 2015/16.
Leicester City began the campaign as pre-season favourites for relegation, having narrowly escaped the drop the previous season.
However, the Foxes began bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and from there never slowed down. Vardy opened his account on the opening weekend and ended the campaign with 24 league goals, including a record-breaking run of 11 consecutive games with a goal. He added six assists, as Claudio Ranieri’s side overcame odds of 5000/1 to be crowned champions for the first time in their history.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s elevation to iconic status accelerated during a phenomenal 2007/08 campaign for Manchester United. Having collected a clean sweep of Player of the Year awards a season prior, he kicked on to a new level to score 42 goals in all competitions.
His 31 league goals equalled the then-record for a 38-game season, as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side retained the Premier League and won the Champions League in a historic double. The Portugal international added six assists in a campaign that saw him emerge as arguably the world’s finest footballer. Ronaldo was recognised with the Ballon d’Or for the first time for his displays.
Erling Haaland shattered multiple records after arriving at Manchester City.
The Norwegian exploded in English football with 36 goals during the 2022/23 season, breaking the Premier League’s single-season record. Eight assists came alongside his record Golden Boot return, equalling the record for goal involvements (44) in a 38-game Premier League campaign. He matched Thierry Henry’s feat from the 2002/03 season.
Thierry Henry was the leading light of the Premier League in the mid-noughties and inspired Arsenal to two title successes under Arsene Wenger.
The latter of those saw Henry involved in 49% of the Gunners’ goals as Henry scored 30 times and laid on six more.
His performances helped the North London side win the title without losing a game as Arsenal became English football’s first top-flight ‘Invincibles’ since Preston North End in 1888/89.
Alan Shearer holds the record for the highest involvement of goals scored by a Premier League title-winning team.
Blackburn Rovers broke the British transfer record by signing Shearer from Southampton, following their promotion to the Premier League in 1992. An ACL injury curtailed his debut campaign but Shearer bounced back to fire Kenny Dalglish’s side to the title. He formed a brilliant understanding with Chris Sutton, as Blackburn’s ‘SAS’ partnership tormented teams.
Shearer scored 34 league goals to win the Golden Boot and added 13 assists, with his 47 goal involvements a divisional single-season record.
