Rangers have struggled in the 2024/25 SPFL this season and they are already nine points behind Celtic at the top.
The Bears backed their manager, Philippe Clement, in the summer window with funds for squad rebuilding, and he is likely to be given more time at Ibrox to turn things around.
There is no doubt that the Rangers boss is under some serious strain, but without a permanent chairman and a CEO in place, it is highly unlikely that they will sack him.
Rangers will face Celtic in the Premier Sports Cup Final, and the outcome of the match could also determine Clement’s Ibrox future.
His sacking will not solve major problems at the club, but his position will definitely come under scrutiny if the results do not improve after the international break.
Rangers fans would love to see Steven Gerrard being given another chance. The Liverpool legend won the Scottish Premiership title and did a terrific job at the Scottish club before he moved to Aston Villa.
However, his performances at Villa and Al-Ettifaq aren’t encouraging. Moreover, he was given a long time (and funds) to overhaul the squad and build a team to his own taste. It is doubtful that the Gers will allow that to happen again.
According to journalist Andrew Newport, Derek McInnes seems “the obvious choice” to replace Clement at the club. He is a former Rangers player and knows the club inside out.
McInnes did a brilliant job at Aberdeen, although he may not be someone who could excite the fan base.
After sacking Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Michael Beale in back-to-back seasons, it doesn’t give a strong impression if Rangers pull the trigger on Clement in exactly a similar way.
The managerial appointments at Rangers are going on in cycles, and it is taking the club nowhere.
It makes a lot of sense for the Gers to stick with Clement and give him more time to make it work. Unfortunately, there is little evidence to show that Clement’s side can go on a long unbeaten run and close the gap with Celtic and Aberdeen at the top.
