Last summer Manchester City stood still in the transfer market. Ilkay Gundogan and Savinho were the only two players who arrived at the club last summer. A heavy price has been paid by the Premier League champions for that decision. Injuries, age and a hectic schedule have all worked against Pep Guardiola’s squad. Heading into the January transfer window, it was obvious that City needed to quickly move to strengthen their squad.
Over recent days it has become apparent that Manchester City are moving quickly to rectify last summer’s error. There is a real intent from City to add the reinforcements they need to strengthen for the remainder of this season and beyond. David Ornstein has reported for the Athletic that Manchester City are working on deals to sign Omar Marmoush and Abdukodir Khusanov from Eintracht Frankfurt and Lens. Fabrizio Romano has also reported on X that are moving quickly to secure a deal for Palmeiras centre-back Vitor Reis. What those reports show is that there is a clear signal of intent to Manchester City’s moves in the January transfer window.
The Manchester City hierarchy is determined to add quality players to Pep Guardiola’s squad. Omar Marmoush would add quality to City’s attack. The versatile striker is almost the ideal addition to the current City squad. Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis are both signings for the future. The pair of centre-backs could one-day form City’s defensive pairing if they do land at the Etihad and develop as their potential suggests that they could.
There is a caveat to all of this. Manchester City have to sign the trio to make this transfer window a success. But there is a real intent from City to make a mark this month. That is clear to see after the recent reports. The City hierachy can’t go back on last summer’s error, but they can kickstart the rebuild of Pep Guardiola’s squad this month. It appears they are intent on doing just that based on who they are moving for currently.
