With the Premier League title within touching distance, Cody Gakpo is refusing to let emotion cloud the task at hand. Liverpool stand a single point away from their 20th league championship, and the final obstacle is Sunday’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.
It’s not just another game. It’s the culmination of a campaign built on structure, belief, and resilience. “This is the moment we all worked so hard for the whole year,” Gakpo told Liverpoolfc.com, reflecting the mood around the AXA Training Centre.
Disappointment in other competitions has only sharpened the squad’s focus. “Obviously we lost the [Carabao Cup] final, we were out of the FA Cup, we got knocked out of the Champions League as well. They were moments where we were maybe not as good as we wanted to be,” he said. But there is no disguising what a title would mean. “If we can win it at the weekend, it’s an amazing season for all of us and something we can really build on in the future.”

Under Arne Slot, Liverpool have embraced a philosophy that goes beyond tactical tweaks. Mental discipline, emotional composure, and a collective ethos have defined their approach since the first whistle in August.
“That’s the approach of the manager, how he approaches every game,” said Gakpo. “That’s how we as a team speak to each other and live together: ‘It’s not done until it’s over.’”
That clarity of purpose has underpinned their campaign. Even as rivals faltered and the gap widened, Liverpool’s focus stayed internal. The mantra hasn’t shifted: one game at a time, one challenge at a time.
Gakpo’s development has mirrored the club’s broader evolution. Sixteen goals and five assists in 44 appearances tell only part of the story. The 25-year-old Netherlands international has adapted to a new role on the left flank, embracing the nuances of Slot’s system and displaying versatility in attack.
“Myself, I also developed a lot. Like we discussed a few times already, I changed position slightly, got some goals. Unfortunately got injured as well, which took a bit off,” he said. “I think overall it’s a good season but it’s not finished yet, hopefully we can end on a big high all together.”

His personal journey feeds into the larger dream – winning the Premier League. “When you start football and you get knowledge about the leagues in Europe, I think everybody can agree that the Premier League is one of if not the best league in Europe and the world. To become hopefully a Premier League winner is every footballer’s dream at some point in life.”
Tottenham have had an erratic season, but Gakpo is under no illusions. “Maybe they don’t have the best Premier League season they have had over the years, but everybody knows they have so much quality in the team and a lot of good players,” he said.
“It’s not a game that you say, ‘We will win that or we’ll get a draw for sure.’ No. That’s with every team in the league. Everybody knows how hard it can be, it doesn’t really matter who you play. But it’s up to us. We have to get in there and put in a good performance.”
This is not about fate or emotion. It’s about execution, control, and delivering when it matters most. And on Sunday, Liverpool fans will hope that Cody Gakpo and his teammates turn a dream into a statement.
