Chelsea did enquire about the possibility of taking Douglas Luiz on loan, but were put off by the demands of Juventus according to journalist Matt Law.

The January window is into the final two weeks and this is the stage where things generally start to heat up in regards to transfers.

The Blues haven’t been particularly busy this month, and as of yet no players have been moved on, although Trevoh Chalobah has been recallled, whilst a €15m deal has been agreed with Strasbourg for Mamadou Sarr who will join in the summer.

Chelsea put off by Juventus’ demands for Luiz

It’s no secret Chelsea are looking for a striker, but there now appears to be the need for cover in midfield given injuries to Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia.

Chelsea currently only have two fit midfielders in Moises Caicedo and Kieran Dewsbury-Hall, who started his first league game of the season against Wolves on Monday night.

Lesley Ugochukwu and Andrey Santos are currently on loan at Southampton and Strasbourg respectively and recalling one of the pair would make sense, although that’s now believed to be unlikely.

The Athletic have reported the Blues are open to signing a midfielder this month if it’s the right player and the finances make sense.

Chelsea have been linked with a loan move for Juventus star Luiz, and Law has now provided a further update on the situation.

He took to X.com and said:

“Chelsea did ask on the conditions of loaning Douglas Luiz to the end of the season but do not want to pay a big fee or commit to an obligation, which Juventus are demanding. There is other PL interest in Luiz.”

It appears that deal is now off the table, although with Juventus interested in Renato Veiga you wonder why a deal couldn’t be done involving both players.

Chelsea are seriously light in midfield and not acting this month would be a huge risk, which could backfire and cost the Blues Champions League football next season.
