Tottenham Hotspur have an interesting battle with Aston Villa in the Premier League on Friday at 7:30pm.
Tottenham (4-3-3): Vicario; Spence, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bissouma, Gray, Sarr; Odobert, Richarlison, Tel.
Tottenham aren’t playing for anything in the Premier League in their final two games. Instead the full focus will be on the Europa League Final next Wednesday. So Ange Postecoglou has some decisions to make regarding his team.
Dejan Kulusevski will miss the end of the season after undergoing surgery on a knee injury, another big blow for Tottenham. The Swede joins James Maddison, Lucas Bergvall and Timo Werner in missing the remainder of the campaign.
Radu Dragusin remains a long-term injury absentee and may not return until the end of 2025. But Tottenham have been boosted by the return of Son Heung-min, who has missed the past month through injury. The Tottenham captain will undoubtedly get minutes against Villa, it’s just a question of whether he starts.
Given Tottenham’s bad luck with injuries, it’s unlikely that Son will start, instead coming on from the bench. Postecoglou will need to find the right balance in resting key players to ensure they don’t get injured before the Europa League Final, and making sure they get enough game time to build momentum.
So Postecoglou may opt to start his strongest defence, with Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero the centre-back pairing ahead of Guglielmo Vicario in goal. But we may see Djed Spence come in at right-back, to allow Pedro Porro a rest from the start.
On the left, unfortunately for Destiny Udogie there aren’t many rotational options. We may see Archie Gray given a start in midfield alongside Yves Bissouma and Pape Marr, with Rodrigo Bentancur given some time to rest.
And up front, assuming Son doesn’t start, we could see a fully rotated trio of Wilson Odobert, Richarilson and Mathys Tel.
Tottenham have had rotten luck with injuries over the season. But Dejan Kulusevski’s might be the worst, especially with the Europa League Final around the corner. The Swede has been so important to Tottenham across the campaign.
Kulusevski has played in multiple roles and positions for Tottenham this season, scoring seven goals and providing four assists along the way in the league.
The Swede leads Tottenham players for chances created in the Premier League this season with 65, including nine big chances. Only Son (16) has created more big chances for Tottenham this season.
Kulusevski also sits third among Tottenham players for possessions won in the middle third (54) and top for possessions won in the attacking third (27). An all-battling midfielder, he’ll be a big miss.
