Marcus Rashford sealed a late winter transfer to Aston Villa much to the surprise of many, including his new boss Unai Emery.
The 27-year-old is an academy product of Manchester United who cemented himself as one of the club’s biggest stars in recent years, but he’s been dominating the headlines for all the wrong reasons as of late.
The striker only played under Ruben Amorim for a few weeks following the Portuguese’s arrival at Carrington, before being wholly omitted from his plans. He was denied any playing time over the last 12 outings across all competitions, as the new Man Utd boss revealed he wasn’t impressed with his training routine.
Relieved by the player’s departure, Amorim told the press on Thursday that they must now address their never-ending Rashford questions to Emery, and the journalists certainly heeded the advice.
When asked about his new signing, the Spanish tactician insisted he doesn’t know the background behind his Man Utd exit, as it’s not an interest of his. And while Amorim revealed he couldn’t connect with the England international, Emery provided a much more different feedback.
“I’m very happy with the window we did, I’m very happy with him [Rashford]. The conversation I had with him was a very normal conversation with a player and coach, speaking about football,” said the Villa boss in his press conference ahead of the FA Cup clash against Tottenham (via the Independent).
“I only want the best football from him. As a person as well into the dressing room like one more player helping us. I think his potential is huge potential to exploit. I don’t want to know the reason he is leaving from Manchester but I am very happy keeping him here.”
Nevertheless, the former Arsenal manager admits reviving the striker’s career remains a ‘huge’ challenge, but insists he’s been showing positive signs in the training field.
“I am very happy to try to exploit and help him recover his performances, individually and collectively. My challenge with him is huge. His challenge with us is exciting. Today he trained fantastic, tomorrow again, Sunday match. We will enjoy each step and then the future is only building with the present.
