Manchester United have had a dreadful season, sparking talk that their squad needs a complete overhaul this summer.

Former striker Wayne Rooney believes most of the current players are not good enough, but highlighted a couple who the club should build around.

He told The Overlap: “They look lost. They look scared. Bruno Fernandes keeps producing. He annoys you at times but keeps producing.

“They need massive changes to the squad – I think ten to fifteen players need to leave the club. They cannot do that, but there is a mentality where no one is taking responsibility in the squad.

“I would keep Bruno and Kobbie Mainoo. There is a culture at the club where it is too easy to lose games. Just show some character and fight on the pitch. It is terrible to watch. It hurts.

“Being from Liverpool but spending so many years at United, I want the team to do well. I have got my kids in the academy, and watching them hurts.”

Man United cannot afford a massive overhaul

There is no denying that United must revamp their squad, but they cannot afford to do that.

They are struggling to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and must be careful with their summer transfer business.

Antony and Marcus Rashford will likely be sold, while Casemiro may also depart. Jonny Evans, Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof are expected to leave for free.

They will need to be replaced, which would come at a financial cost. Letting more players leave would put a heavy financial burden on the club.

Squad development is a gradual process, and United must follow the same approach as clubs such as Arsenal and Liverpool.
