What a Serie A play-off will mean for Inter’s Champions League final date with PSG

There is still a genuine possibility that the Serie A title is decided by a one-off play-off match between Inter and Napoli with two games left to play in 2024-25, but there will have to be a rescheduling of fixtures with the Nerazzurri already booked in to play against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final on May 31.

Napoli have a one-point advantage over Inter with two league matches left to play in 2024-25. If the two teams finish the season level on points, the title will be decided by a play-off.

If that does happen, there will almost certainly be a change to the schedules ahead of the Champions League final at the end of the month.

What needs to happen for a Scudetto play-off in Serie A?

Below are all the possible scenarios remaining for Napoli and Inter before the end of the 2024-25 Serie A season.

If Napoli win both of their remaining fixtures … Napoli will win the title outright, regardless of either of Inter’s results.
If Napoli win one and draw one … Inter will require two wins to win the Serie A title. If Inter were to win one and draw one, or any worse, Napoli will still win the title outright.
If Napoli win one and lose one … Inter will win the title outright with two victories. If Inter were to win one and draw one in this scenario, the title would be decided by a play-off. If Inter win one and lose their other, or any worse, Napoli will win the title outright.
If Napoli draw both remaining matches … Inter will win the Serie A title with four points from their last two matches. Three Inter points will take the title to a play-off in this scenario. If Inter get two points or less from their last two games, Napoli will win the title outright.
If Napoli draw one and lose one … Inter will win the Serie A title with one victory from their last two matches of the season. Two Inter draws will take the title to a play-off in this scenario. A draw and a loss, or two losses, will see Napoli win the title outright.
If Napoli lose both remaining matches … Inter will win the Serie A title with one victory from their last two matches. One Inter draw and a loss will take the title to a play-off in this scenario. Napoli will win the title outright if both teams lose their last two games of the season.

When will the Scudetto play-off and Champions League final be played?

One thing that is for certain is that the Champions League final, scheduled for May 31, will not change dates because of the Serie A title fight.

That means that the onus is on Serie A to rearrange fixtures to comply with the Champions League final if required.

According to reports from multiple outlets including La Gazzetta dello Sport and Sport Mediaset, there is a possibility that the matches Napoli vs. Cagliari and Como vs. Inter, currently scheduled for the last round of the season on May 25, are brought forwards and played on Wednesday 21 or Thursday 22 instead.

That would allow a Scudetto play-off to take place on either Sunday, May 25, or Monday, May 26 instead. That still allows Inter almost a full week to prepare for the Champions League final against PSG on May 31.
