Sheffield United have been told to make a move to sign former loanee Tommy Doyle, who is currently out of favour at Wolves.
Sheffield United are set for a busy summer regardless of whether they seal a return to the Premier League.
Whilst many clubs have the luxury of being able to plan ahead as they know what division they will be in next season, the recruitment team at Bramall Lane know that two scenarios are possible.
A wretched streak of three successive defeats to Oxford United, Millwall and Plymouth Argyle at the start of April ultimately ended the Blades' automatic promotion hopes, with Leeds United and Burnley clinching the top-two spots instead. The play-offs await, though, with a third-placed finish nailed-on since the 2-1 defeat to the Clarets on Easter Monday.
It's hard to predict what level of football Bramall Lane will be hosting, but some players may just be on their radar for both the Premier League and the Championship, with FLW fan pundit Jimmy, of the Blades Ramble YouTube channel, telling us that Wolves’ Tommy Doyle should fall into that category.
Doyle has been linked with Sunderland along with the Blades, and it will be interesting to see just how intent they are on returning the midfielder to Bramall Lane this summer.
He explained that Doyle could be a standout player for the Blades in the Championship, and the club could be in the market for a midfielder if Vini Souza leaves the club.
Doyle, of course, spent a productive 2022/23 campaign on loan in the Steel City, registering three goals and four assists as they gained promotion alongside Burnley.
The ex-Cardiff City man, who also starred in their run to the FA Cup semi-finals, has not replicated that sort of form since, but he's still fondly remembered by those at the Lane to this day and they have every reason to believe he could return this summer.
Meanwhile, if Sheffield United go up, Jimmy tipped Doyle to become a good squad player, with the former loanee having made 50 top-flight appearances for Wolves over the past two years.
Yet, since Vitor Pereira arrived at Molineux, Doyle has found game time hard to come by, and the Portuguese chief has admitted he will hold talks with the player about a summer switch as a departure looks increasingly imminent.
On Saturday, Doyle failed to make the squad as Wolves beat Leicester, so it’s hard to imagine they will stand in his way if the midfielder wants to move on.
Pleasingly for the Blades, Doyle is someone who should be a realistic option.
The former Man City man cost Wolves £4.3m when he made a permanent move to the club, and even though they may want a profit on that, it’s unlikely to take a substantial sum to prise him away.
So, if Chris Wilder’s men go up, he should certainly be within their reach.
Another year in the Championship means a loan may become more likely, but, again, it seems a realistic option.
In either case, wages can sometimes be an issue, but Capology estimates Doyle to be on £10,000 a week at Wolves.
We must stress that this is only an estimate, but that would ensure Doyle fits within the Blades’ wage structure, and it shouldn’t be problematic if they did pursue the midfielder.
Even if he was on a bigger salary, there should be plenty of wriggle room for Sheffield United to meet his demands, particularly as Doyle would likely become an important figure at Bramall Lane.
There may be a battle for the signature of the former England U21 international this summer, if he is allowed to leave Wolves.
But, Sheffield United could be well positioned to capitalise. The fact he enjoyed a loan spell at the club will work in their favour, and it may be achievable from a financial perspective, as Doyle looks for more minutes to really get his career going.
