Our Young Bulls continued their great start to the UEFA Youth League at the Sportcomplex Varkenoord with a battling draw. Feyenoord did battle back from 2-0 down to become the first side to take points from us this season, but our boys remain in a great position to reach the knockout stages.
We rained the chances down on the hosts in Rotterdam - making a supremely determined start. Plenty of young Feyenoord players flew in to block our early efforts before Daniel Beichler's boys tested goalkeeper Ka to his limits. The goalkeeper was lucky to keep a Trummer solo charge out, and the frame of the goal came to his aid as Kenneth Tejiri leapt into the air and threatened with a header.
Valentin Zabransky and Joane Gadou both also sent headers on goal before the two Tims of Trummer and Paumgartner had chances. The hosts also gained a big opportunity to take the lead as Shaqueel Van Persie, son of former star striker Robin crossed the ball for Christian Zawieschitzky, but before he could pounce our keeper was out to stop him.
Our boys started the second period with just as much vigour as they did in the first, and finally found their way onto the scoresheet. Trummer broke free on the right to slot the ball into the middle where Phillip Verhounig slotted us into the lead 51 seconds after his introduction and with his first touch of the ball (46'). The top scorer in the UEFA Youth League then doubled our advantage as Enrique Aguilar sent a superb ball through to Trummer on a break and the captain laid it off for Verhounig to finish in style (54').
Our Young Bulls were cruising towards another three points when the Rotterdam side suddenly showed up. Van Den Elshout received the ball and was free to net in at the second attempt (64'). Moments later, Zawieschitzky blocked a Rust solo charge but unfortunately sent the ball to the feet of Rudisill – for 2-2 (68').
A period to forget was capped with a sending off as Tejiri had a coming together with an opponent - and his reaching an arm out saw referee Campos reach for a red card (70'). It was Pascal Bosschaart's boys who were now setting the tone. Van Den Elshout – from close range – and Rust were both denied by Zawieschitzky before Agboluaje sent the ball wide in the final minute as our youngsters kept their unbeaten record in the league phase!
We really dominated in the first half and had four or five huge chances we weren't able to use. That we couldn't seal it after going 2-0 up is something we have already covered. We didn't make the most of our good moments on the break and got the red card. The sending off completely changed the game - in the end we have to be satisfied with the draw. It was a crazy game!
