맨체스터 시티(맨시티)가 FA컵 결승전에서 크리스탈 팰리스에 패하며 우승 트로피를 차지하는 데 실패했다.

맨시티는 18일(한국시각) 웸블리 스타디움에서 크리스탈 팰리스를 상대한 2024/25 잉글랜드 FA컵 결승전을 통한의 0-1 패배로 마쳤다. 이날 맨시티는 전반전 오마르 마르무시의 페널티 킥이 상대 골키퍼 딘 헨더슨의 선방에 막히는 등 득점 기회를 번번이 놓치며 무득점에 그쳤다.

크리스탈 팰리스는 16분 2선 공격수 에베레치 에제가 결승골을 터뜨렸다. 이후 후반전 다니엘 무뇨스가 골망을 갈랐으나 VAR 검토 결과 오프사이드가 선언됐다.

경기 내용 재구성

맨시티는 주장 케빈 더브라위너가 7분 문전으로 연결한 크로스를 공격수 엘링 홀란드가 반대쪽 포스트에서 헤더로 연결했으나 헨더슨의 선방에 저지당했다.

이후 맨시티는 단 5분 뒤, 요슈코 그바르디올의 헤더가 또 헨더슨에게 막혔다. 이후 마누엘 아칸지의 헤더는 골문을 벗어났다.

연이어 실점 위기를 피한 크리스탈 팰리스는 선제 득점에 성공하며 리드를 잡았다. 에제가 16분 득점하며 크리스탈 팰리스에 리드를 안겼다.

크리스탈 팰리스는 장필리프 마테타가 맨시티의 진영에서 볼을 빼앗은 뒤, 오른쪽 측면으로 전진하는 다니엘 무뇨스에게 패스를 연결했다.

무뇨스가 연결한 패스를 에제가 절묘한 타이밍에 문전으로 침투해 첫 터치를 발리슛으로 연결하며 득점에 성공했다.

선제골을 터뜨린 크리스탈 팰리스는 이어 무뇨스의 크로스를 이스마일라 사르가 위협적인 슈팅으로 이어갔지만, 맨시티 골키퍼 슈테판 오르테가가 이를 선방했다.

It seemed a clear and obvious infringement, but a subsequent VAR check ruled that no further action was necessary with the Palace goalkeeper escaping a red card.

There was then more VAR drama on 34 minutes as City were denied a leveller from the penalty spot.

Bernardo Silva was brought down by Tyrick Mitchell in the box and referee Stuart Atwell’s decision to award the spot-kick was upheld by another lengthy VAR check.

Marmoush was entrusted with penalty but saw his effort palmed away by Henderson with the keeper then gobbling up the rebound as Haaland sought to pounce.

City remained the dominant attacking force and Henderson then produced another outstanding 43rd minute left handed save to deny Jeremy Doku after the winger had jinked into the box, with De Bruyne sending a follow up over the bar.

The Blues came haring out of the blocks at the start of the second half and Haaland was just unable to force a fine Savinho cross over the line.

City were denied again on 56 minutes when a supremely timed block by Daichi Kamada prevented Bernardo converting after he had broken into space eight yards out.

Palace then had the ball in the net for a second time on 57 minutes when Munoz fired in from a tight angle after his initial shot had been palmed away by Ortega.

However, after another length VAR check, Sarr was adjudged to have been offside in the build-up.

Munoz then popped up at the other end producing a crucial late tackle to deny Nico O’Reilly when the full-back was poised to shoot from close range.

Guardiola introduced Phil Foden and Claudio Echeverri from the bench for his first City appearance in a bid to force that crucial leveller.

And the Argentine almost made a stunning impact, finding a fraction of space and firing an 82nd minute shot in on goal only for that man Henderson to deny the Blues yet again.

De Bruyne was the next to go agonisingly close his curling 20 yard shot drifting just the wrong side of the right upright.

In the end though Palace held firm to claim the silverware and leave the Blues frustrated for a second year in a row.

Pep’s verdict

"Congratulations to Palace. We did everything. Nothing to regret. In the last two games we faced teams who are so, so deep. We created a lot. If you cannot score goals, you cannot win.

"I didn’t speak with them [Haaland and Marmoush] about the penalty. They take a decision, penalties are like that. I like guys who take initiative. They decide.

"We are sad because we didn’t win but we played much better, better than against United last season. We did everything. We created a lot of chances. In the last two games we shot 50 times. Football is sometimes like this.

"We did everything and they defended well. We created chances. We controlled the transitions really good. Unfortunately we could not win and we congratulate Crystal Palace."

Ruben dias' verdict

“We know how good they are, they were clinical and had that chance in the beginning and they make it happen.

“Then there was a lot of control from us, a lot of chances and we didn’t turn them into goals.

“We only have ourselves to blame for that and we have and must do better.

“We will feel however we have to feel today, but tomorrow wake up strong and ready to go again.

“These last two games are two massive finals for us, and they mean everything to us."

What’s next

City return to Premier League action on Tuesday evening when we play host to Bournemouth in our final Premier League home game of the season (20.00 UK).

It’s a crucial game in terms of our quest to secure a place in next season’s Champions League.

And it will also afford City fans an opportunity to bid Kevin De Bruyne a fitting farewell on what will be his last Etihad appearance for the Blues.
