3 Positives and 3 Negatives to take from Everton 0 Newcastle 0

POSITIVES

We dominated that

I thought we played well.

We looked much better than previous away games at Bournemouth, Fulham and even Wolves, where we won. Oh how we could have done with a worldie from Harvey on Saturday.

Goodison Park has proved a tough place for Newcastle United to win, having only done so on four occasions this century so we missed an opportunity to say goodbye to the place by taking all three points.

That’s the last time we’ll play the Toffees there, thank goodness, unless Bert Millichip pulls us out the hat against them in the FA Cup.

One defeat in Nine

The Sky reporter boiled my whatsit when he kept saying that we’d lost one in six in all competitions. “It’s one in nine you numpty”, I shouted at the TV.

That’s not too shabby and after the international break, we’ll hopefully have both our injured strikers back.

The Boys from Brazil did good

I thought Bruno and big Joe were immense.

Guimaraes patrolled the centre of the park and everything went through him. He seemed back to his best after a less than auspicious start to the season.

Joelinton also had an excellent game, causing Everton all manner of difficulties and like his compatriot, much better than he’s been of late.

NEGATIVES

We should have won

That was two points definitely lost, as opposed to one gained.

We dominated possession, such that the 67:33 ratio surprised me in that I thought our percentage share would have been more like 77%.

Our expected goals tally was over 2.0 compared to Everton’s 0.7 and 10 corners we had compared to not a single one for them. Whilst our shots on goal numbered 14, we only got three on target and therein lies the issue.

Without Isak and Wilson, our only recognised striker named in the squad that travelled to Merseyside didn’t feature. Eddie obviously doesn’t think he’s ready and his performance midweek against Wimbledon perhaps demonstrates why.

However, it’s not just the lack of firepower. Our right hand side offers little and I think it’s time Tino was a regular at right back, no offence Kieran.

Further up the park, once Isak or Wilson’s back, we might be able to start a game without Murphy or Almiron featuring.

Gordon’s Penalty Woes

When Anthony Gordon stepped up to take that penalty, I just knew he was going to fluff his lines. Hindsight might be a wonderful thing but I hope I’m not just being wise after the event.

Whilst it would have been utterly tremendous to see him neutralise the bile that is exhibited towards him from the Gladwys Street End, I just think in such a highly charged atmosphere, it would have been better for someone else to have stepped up.

Why that hadn’t been agreed beforehand must be down to Gordon’s self-belief and confidence and if that is so, I think it was misplaced.

Not another international break

Oh, the monotony.

Not to mention having some of our best players dashing around the globe, exhausting themselves in the process of turning out in yet another bunch of meaningless matches.

I appreciate that goes with the territory of supporting a club that now has a bit of ambition, but I’m heartily sick of it and guess what? There’s another one to look forward to next month!
