It is obvious to see that Manchester City must sign a midfielder during the current transfer window. Last night’s defeat to PSG perfectly encapsulated the issues with City’s midfield. Bernardo Silva, Mateo Kovacic, Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden were run off their feet by Joao Neves and company at the Parc des Princes last night. Pep Guardiola’s side is in desperate need of an energetic midfielder who can also provide quality in possession. They must also have the potential to play alongside Rodri when he returns from injury.
The list of players who can fulfil that role and who play that way is very small. It becomes even smaller when you consider that Manchester City need a player who can step in and contribute straight away. One player who could fulfil City’s needs is Atalanta’s midfield workhorse Ederson. Now a new report indicates that there may be an opening for Manchester City to seize upon to potentially sign the Brazilian midfielder. Given that City are desperate for a midfielder, if that opening does develop, they simply must seize upon it.
Jack Gaughan has once again reported for the Daily Mail that Ederson has admirers at Manchester City. Gaughan also poses a question: now that Atalanta has fallen seven points behind Napoli in the chase for the Scudetto, is there now a chance that City could move for one of Atalanta’s most important players? Furthermore, Gaughan adds that the City hierarchy remains sceptical that Atalanta will sell Ederson during the current transfer window.
There is no doubting Ederson’s importance to Atalanta. He has been a key reason as to why they sit where they do in the Serie A table. The Brazilian midfielder has also played a key role in their impressive UEFA Champions League campaign. But Atalanta have fallen behind Napoli in the race for the Serie A title. So Jack Gaughan’s question that there may be an opportunity for Manchester City to move for Ederson is a valid one.
Manchester City are in desperate need of a player like Ederson. He’d immediately add what City’s midfield desperately lacks. The Brazilian midfielder could also contribute straight away and the potential of him and Rodri playing together in midfield is an exciting proposition. But the question has always remained would Atalanta sell him in the current transfer window? When it opened the answer appeared to be no. But with the situation changing in regards to Atalanta’s Serie A title chase the opening may be there for City to pounce. If that opening is there they simply must strike. Their need to sign a midfielder like Ederson is obvious to see. It is an issue that can’t be solved with what City currently have or be glossed over. It has to be addressed in the transfer window before it closes. It’s as simple as that. If the chance to sign Ederson is there City must pursue it. They simply have to.
It remains to be seen if Manchester City do move for Ederson or not. But if the opening is there like Jack Gaughan has proposed they simply must pursue it. Manchester City are desperate for a midfielder who plays like Ederson and they can’t afford to wait around any longer. That was apparent last night against PSG and perhaps a perfect storm of events may give City the chance they need to pounce.
