The Young Lions got their campaign started with a game against Belgium on Tuesday, and both Arsenal youngsters were in the starting lineup.

Midfielder Dowman almost had an immediate impact, rounding the goalkeeper and holding off a challenge from Nathan De Cat before firing a shot at goal, but it was stopped by a defender on the line.

England took the lead not long afterwards, with Alejandro Gomes finishing off a quick transition move, and it really should have been 2-0 after more excellent work from Dowman.

Picking up the ball on the right, Dowman twisted one way then another before firing a shot at goal. The initial shot was saved, but it should have been buried on the rebound, with Rio Ngumoha hitting the side netting.

Goalkeeper Porter kept England in the lead in the first half with a strong save from De Cat’s looping header, but there was nothing he could do about Noah Fernandez’s excellent free-kick going in off the crossbar soon after the break.

Porter made another fingertips save in the final 10 minutes to keep things level, and the match ultimately ended 1-1. With Italy beating the Czech Republic in the other game, England have a two-point gap to make up when the two sides face each other on Friday.
