Arsenal were dealt a fresh injury blow on Sunday as William Saliba suffered a hamstring injury in the first half of the Gunners' 1-0 win over Newcastle.

Saliba was replaced by Riccardo Calafiori at the break, with Mikel Arteta confirming at full time that the switch was not a tactical one.

He said: “I think [Saliba] felt something in his hamstring in the first half, unfortunately, so we had to make the substitution.”

Arsenal were boosted in the match by one key returnee, though, with Kai Havertz making his first appearance since suffering a hamstring injury on a warm-weather training camp in February. Also back in Arteta’s starting lineup after missing last week’s 2-2 draw at Liverpool with a minor issue was Declan Rice, who scored the winner against the Magpies.

Here is all the latest Arsenal injury news...

William Saliba

Saliba was replaced at halftime of Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Newcastle at the weekend, with Mikel Arteta confirming that he had ‘felt something in his hamstring’.

The severity of the injury remains unclear, and the player will likely undergo further tests this week.

Potential return date: Unknown

Kai Havertz

German forward Kai Havertz has made a surprise early return to play for Arsenal. He was not expected to return this season after suffering a hamstring injury on a warm-weather training camp in February, but has recovered ahead of schedule.

Havertz replaced Bukayo Saka to make a 14-minute cameo in Sunday’s win over Newcastle, and could be in line for more minutes in next week’s trip to Southampton.

Potential return date: N/A

Mikel Merino

Arsenal’s makeshift striker and midfielder Mikel Merino missed Sunday’s Newcastle clash through suspension after picking up a pair of yellow cards in last week’s 2-2 draw at Anfield.

He has now served his one-game suspension, though, and will be back in contention for the last day of the season.

Potential return date: Sunday, May 25 vs Southampton (A)

Jurrien Timber

Jurrien Timber missed out on a return to the Arsenal squad for the Newcastle clash as he looks to shake off an issue sustained ahead of the Champions League semi-final.

Of his fitness, Arteta said: “We're going to have to wait and see tomorrow if [he] can deal with things that they haven't done because they weren't ready to that at the end of the week.”

He was in the squad for last week’s trip to Liverpool, though, suggesting his issue is not severe.

Potential return date: Sunday, May 25 vs Southampton (A)

Gabriel Maghalaes

There is no change to Gabriel’s situation - he is not expected to return this season after undergoing hamstring surgery in April. His focus has shifted to preparing for next season.

An Arsenal statement said: “Further to being substituted during our match against Fulham on Tuesday, we can confirm that Gabriel Magalhaes has sustained a hamstring injury which requires surgery.

“Gabi will undergo a surgical repair procedure to his hamstring in the coming days, and immediately begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme, with the aim to be ready for the start of next season.”

Potential return date: August 2025

Gabriel Jesus

Gabriel Jesus is not expected to return this season after suffering an ACL injury in an FA Cup clash against Manchester United in January.

He has struggled with injury since moving to the Emirates, with this latest injury the most significant of the lot and expected to keep him sidelined at least through the start of next season.

Potential return date: August 2025

Takehiro Tomiyasu

Completing the list of Arsenal players shaking off long-term injuries is Takehiro Tomiyasu, who has made just one appearance this season as he struggles to recover from a knee issue.

He went under the knife in February in an attempt to solve the issue.

The Japan international posted a statement on Instagram: “I’ve had a surgery on my knee few days ago and I’ve already started my rehab to do what I love the most again.

“It has been the toughest period in my career for sure and it carries on a bit more but I won’t give up. Thank you for your support and see you again.”

Potential return date: Autumn 2025
