Fabio Vieira was at the centre of the drama in Porto’s derby draw with Sporting CP on Friday night, involved in the equalising goal and a red-card decision.

Arsenal loanee Fabio Vieira wasn’t selected in the starting lineup for Porto against Sporting CP on Friday, but he ended up having a key role to play in the eventual result.

Sporting take a 1-0 lead over the hosts through Ivan Fresneda in the first half, with Vieira eventually coming on in the 62nd minute.

The midfielder created a couple of chances, but his big moment came in the 94th minute. Receiving the ball on the edge of the penalty area, Vieira played in an excellent curling cross that Samuel Omorodion squared for Danny Namaso to score an equaliser.

Yet the drama was far from done, despite the game being deep in injury time.

Sporting’s Morten Hjulmand picked up a yellow card for protesting a decision, and Matheus Reis was also booked as he got involved as well. Reis then took the argument too far and was sent off.

Though they were down to 10 men, Sporting still had a corner and a chance to retake the lead. But their odds of doing so decreased further when Ousmane Diomande put his head in against Vieira before the ball had been played.

The referee was well-positioned and judged the incident to be a headbutt, dismissing Diomande to put Sporting down to nine.

A couple of minutes later, Vieira himself also picked up a booking for arguing with the official, as did Omorodion.

After an injury-time spell involving four yellow cards, two reds, and a goal, the referee finally blew the full-time whistle.

Though Porto couldn’t get the win, Vieira certainly helped them out with their equalising goal, as well as getting Sporting’s starting centre-back banned for the coming games.
