Gunners make some tough decisions for UWCL showpiece in Lisbon
Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers has made some key selection calls for today’s Women’s Champions League final showdown with Barcelona.
The first of which is sees Daphne van Domselaar start in between the posts. The goalkeeper returned from injury for the semi-final second-leg victory against Lyon but hasn’t featured since because of a niggling ankle issue.
Van Domselaar trained this week and has clearly proven her fitness to start the UWCL final. Manuela Zinsberger was on standby to deputise once again if needed, though she has been named on the bench.
Slegers confirmed ahead of the match that her squad has close to a perfect bill of health, saying: “We have a great squad and a lot of players available. The only player not available tomorrow is Rosa Kafaji.”
Chloe Kelly and Beth Mead are battling for a spot on the right-hand side of the attack. The pair have often rotated in this competition and the former is picked to start in Lisbon.
The rest of Sleger’s XI is as expected. Women’s Super League (WSL) Player of the Year Mariona Caldentey lines up in midfield against her former club, Leah Williamson lines up in defence, Alessia Russo leads the line and Kim Little captains the side.
Arsenal XI: Van Domselaar, Fox, Williamson, Catley, Mariona, Little (C), McCabe, Maanum, Foord, Kelly, Russo
Subs: Zinsberger, Williams, Wubben-Moy, Codina, Ilestedt, Nighswonger, Walti, Cooney-Cross, Pelova, Hurtig, Mead, Blackstenius
