Marc-Andre Ter Stegen’s position as Barcelona’s first-choice goalkeeper is being questioned and word has it that the club refuse to hand him the title unless he proves his worth in pre-season.

The German star’s age coupled with his poor form and track record of multiple knee surgeries has got the board prioritising the signing of a new goalkeeper and Espanyol star Joan Garcia has emerged as a serious target.

The Spaniard is available for a bargain fee of just €25 million this summer and Barcelona see him as a great option to reinforce the goal.

The rivalry between Barcelona and Espanyol and the social impact the move will have, needless to say, have arisen as obstacles.

Barcelona’s stance confirmed

Reports on Garcia’s situation in recent days have been contrasting, to say the least with some outlets claiming he is open to a move to Barcelona and others claiming he is strictly against it.

As relayed by Alex Pintanel in a recent update, however, Barcelona have decided to go all out for the youngster immediately.

Joan Garcia’s agents are in favour of their client making the controversial move across Catalonia and are supporting Barcelona’s cause.

The final decision, however, will be made by the player himself after considering all the options that he has on his table.

Garcia is largely seen as the single biggest reason Espanyol were not relegated this season and has been in sensational form in between the sticks averaging 3.8 saves per game, eight clean sheets and 7.49 goals prevented in La Liga.

The 24-year-old’s departure from Espanyol is all but confirmed but it remains to be seen if he is willing to risk it all and push for greatness with Barcelona. Needless to say, it will be a difficult decision for him especially on a personal and social level.
