There were four Women’s Champions League games tonight, as Group C and D got their second round of fixtures underway.

Arsenal see off Vålerenga to start new era in style

Arsenal got the post-Jonas Eidevall era off to the ideal start with a 3-1 victory over Vålerenga at the Emirates Stadium.

Just two minutes into it, the Gunners took the lead through Emily Fox. The right-back was on hand to slot home after Vålerenga failed to clear their lines.

The Gunners thought they had a second inside 10 minutes but Alessia Russo was offside when her shot went in.

They got that second goal just before the half hour. Mariona Caldentey powered through the middle, laid it off to Beth Mead, whose ball across the box found Cailtin Foord, who took a touch before smashing home.

Vålerenga pulled one back out of nowhere in the 34th minute through Olaug Tvedten. Laia Codina lost the ball trying to play out from the back, and the Norwegian midfielder slotted hone.

After a nervy second half, Arsenal sealed the win in interim manager Renee Selgers’ first game in charge with late goals from Mariona Caldentey and Russo.

Barça hammer Hammarby to make UWCL history

Barcelona bounced back from their opening day loss to Manchester City with a stunning 9-0 victory against Hammarby, which is a new record win in the Women’s Champions League.

The champions took the lead after 10 minutes through Caroline Graham Hansen. The Norwegian winger took advantage of a defensive error to finish confidently.

It was 2-0 14 minutes later, this time Clàudia Pina getting in on the action. The ball was cut back inside the box, Ewa Pajor mishit it but Pina was there to finish past the Hammarby keeper.

Barça made it three on the stroke of half-time through Alexia Putellas. Patri Guijarro put the ball into the box and the captain headed home.

The second half started in the same fashion, with Mapi León and Pina getting the fourth and fifth goals before the hour.

Hansen, the scorer of the first, turned provider for the sixth, and Ewa Pajor tapped home from close range, before getting another for herself.

Esmee Brugts got Barça’s eight to equal the record before Fridolina Rolfö slotted home from the spot in the 90th minute to make history.

Man City battle back to beat excellent St Pölten

Manchester City survived a scare to record a 3-2 away win against an impressive St Pölten side.

It took just six minutes for City to get the opening goal, and what a goal it was. The ball was passed around the box well before Alanna Kennedy smashed a beauty into the bottom corner from all of 25 yards.

After scoring her first-ever Champions League goal, the Australian defender almost had her second just after the half hour mark, seeing a deflected wide go just wide.

Despite mostly dominating, City were pegged back by St Pölten four minutes before half-time. A corner was sent in, and Melanie Brunnthaler got her head to the ball to get her side’s first goal of this season’s Champions League, and the equaliser.

Eight minutes into the second half, the Austrian champions took a shock lead. Aoba Fujino couldn’t clear a corner, and Kamila Dubcova was picked out, and the midfielder swivelled and finished brilliantly.

Fujino made up for it four minutes later, grabbing her first goal for City with a really smart finish at the back post from Chloe Kelly’s cross.

City retook the lead with 10 minutes to go through Mary Fowler, who headed home from Lauren Hemp’s corner, and held out to continue their 100% start to the competition.

Bayern earn impressive win at Juventus

Bayern Munich defeated Juventus 2-0 in Turin to make it two wins from two, and take control of Group C.

Bayern took the lead in the 17th minute from a corner which Juventus failed to deal with. Giulia Gwinn headed the ball towards goal, and Linda Dallmann was there to poke it home.

Despite dominating possession for large parts of the game, the German champions did not have all their own way, with Juve coming close to scoring several times.

They eventually got their second to seal the win with less than 20 minutes remaining. Again, it came from a corner, and this time, Pernille Harder smashed home at the second attempt.
