The comments from neutrals especially telling…

A lot of it different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from the BBC Sport ‘neutrals’.

The BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past had been overwhelmingly a catalogue of abuse aimed at NUFC supporters.

Particularly stuff about the Newcastle United owners and the media inspired pile-ons that NUFC fans have become used to, when blamed for who now owns their club.

On this occasion though, the politics not entirely absent, though far more about matters on the pitch..

The BBC Sport readers comments from neutrals, Chelsea fans and the odd Newcastle supporter also contributing:

‘I will agree Chelsea deserved the win, they scored more goals after all. But I think Newcastle put on a good show away from home at one of the division’s form sides that ran then-leaders Liverpool very close last week. A couple of uncharacteristic errors from Tino, Isak and Pope to allow the goals to happen, and some uncharacteristic hesitancy from Isak and Barnes where they normally score.’

‘I’m no Newcastle fan but agree with you, they should be busting a gut to keep Isak.’

‘Another win for Chelsea! And up to 4th. Sorry haters, crawl back under your rocks for another week.’

‘A game spoiled by appalling refereeing another 7 yellow cards for Chelsea and not a bad tackle anywhere. Look at the Neto booking a joke a simple tackle. Simon Hooper as bad as Anthony Taylor card happy.’

‘Chelsea were appalling. Did you not watch the game?’

‘Dan Burn pulls the opponent in every game. The ref should have stuck with the penalty award.’

‘It was NEVER a pen

But Newcastle should have had a pen in the first half.’

‘Newcastle?? No such Club….Saudi United now.’

‘Chelsea will win the premier league in the next few years for sure. Cole Palmer is outstanding. No im not a Chelsea fan.’

‘Palmer is outstanding and Chelsea have a good manager who has managed to pull a decent team from a chaotic transfer policy. I don’t know if they will win the league but they are certainly going to be perennial Champions League qualification contenders going forward.’

‘(Sunderland fan) 2 points out of 15 relegation form.’

‘Exactly… Haway the Toonoil.’

‘Newcastle’s bubble has definitely burst.’

‘Give us a chance to spend 300 milion every summer and it would be a different story pal.’

‘After having spent less than any other prem club over the previous 10 years. We still have players we had in the championship. FFP was made by the big 6 to stop anyone competing with them.’

‘Chelsea rode their luck but we’re the better side. Super CP running the show. Thank gould for James return, the defence still needs some work though. NFC look ordinary. Burns slower than Maguire!’

‘Newcastle could easily be in the bottom 6 were it not for a few good results in the opening 3 or 4 fixtures where the team played poorly but picked up a good haul of points.’

‘So they could be lower down the league if they had picked up less points? You sound like a bit of a bright spark.’

‘The biggest duck egg by far is Linton , Mr Invisible i call him , does absolutely nowt , get rid.’

‘The Jackson goal, and Cole Palmers goal is only fitting that Chelsea legend Zola should be in attendance.

Newcastle probably deserved a draw, always looked dangerous, tbh.’

‘Who doesn’t love Palmer.Scored only to be disallowed by VAR. Jackson hit them like a very smooth criminal. All credit to Newcastle, they were very attacking and even Isak scored. But in the second 45 Palmer was the name of the game Lets just say Londons slowly turning into an ice rink.’

‘Geordies were sold a dream and foolishly they believed all the hype.’

Mags not geordies. Many geordies follow SAFC.’

‘Champions league not long ago. How long since the mackems were in the champions league? Europa league? Dream of it much?’

‘We’re paying the price for an appalling transfer window, club management have really let Howe down.’

‘Newcastle played well a lot of the match, let down by individual mistakes and key moments.’
